Spring 2022 - As we brought in other knowledgeable community members, our plans continued to evolve. Terry Norman is a landscaper who looked at some of our plans and helped us to understand the key issues when planting a garden that must be strong enough to survive the summers with limited care. This included the need to create berms that would help to direct water to the plants. |
We also considered things like how to make any pathways accessible for all visitors to the garden, and the possibility of fundraising through the sale of benches for people to sit and contemplate. We also discussed bringing in things like large rocks that people could sit on. One of the really neat ideas was to have seed paper that students could write a message on and then plant in the garden. With his advice, we settled on a design that would incorporate a turtle shape, with the head and fins creating berms that will direct water to the medicine wheel in the middle. |
In May, teacher Jennifer Williams presented the progress of the students with the School Board; Trustee of Ward Two, Shelley Kinley, was able to connect us with Michelle Dominique-Aris of Aris Landscape Design. Michelle’s enthusiasm and ideas have inspired us as we go forward in creating the official plans that will help us to begin taking steps towards breaking ground and starting to build our garden.
